Synopsis
Emily Watts had always wanted to be a police officer, just like her father. For her, the police are the real heroes of the world. Not those people that fly above her head every day, flaunting their special abilities and gifts and making ordinary people feel so inconsequential.

When Emily is involved in the accidental death of Andromeda, one of the world’s greatest and most beloved heroines, she finds herself in serious trouble. Faced with the threat of a prison sentence that would forever separate her from her son and sister, the government gives her an opportunity to avoid incarceration. It would mean lying to the entire world---and becoming what she detests the most.

My thoughts
Books about superheroes are not usually my thing. The synopsis sounded pretty good and there was a nice cover attached, so I decided to give this book a go. This book was highly enjoyable and I do believe the entertainment rating is very high. As a critical reviewer, I had fun to read this book, but it wasn't one of my favorites.

Pros
  • Action: There are a lot of books that are placed in the Action genre, where there is more talking than actual action. This book deserves to be in the Action genre, because there is a lot of action in this book! To my opinion, a superhero  book deserves a nice portion of action throughout the story. There were a lot of conversations in this book, but the necessary action scenes make a great balance in this book.
  • Different superheroes: I love how this book contains a dozen of different superheroes with their own names, clothing and superhero-abilities. To discover more superheroes and what they can do was so much fun. I believe John Yeo Jr. would be perfectly capable to write a great superhero-series about all kinds of superheroes.
  • Plot twists: This story contains a lot of plot twists. I never had expectations, because I learned very fast that the things that I expected, were never going to happen in this book. The plot twists kept me on edge and were my favorite parts in this book.
Cons
  • Clones, aliens, humans: At one point in this book I totally lost track of all the different species. There were humans with gifts, and humans with no gifts, and some people are called Sparks and there are aliens and clones and... WHAT?! I was so confused and had no idea where to find the proper explanation for all the different species in this book. It was very confusing for me at some point.
  • Swearing 8 y/o: At the beginning of the book there is a lot of swearing. Okay, some swearing can happen, but when an eight-year-old kid is throwing around the F-word, you lose me. The way the adults reacted was even more revolting.. And just. Nope. Teach this kid some manners.
  • Weird decisions: At some point in this book the main character (Emily) keeps sulking, she is so down and depressed because she wants to see her family, etc. When she has the chance and opportunity to visit her family she makes a different decision and all the whining and family-love was totally unbelievable at that point. First; she's complaining the whole book, because she want's to see her family, then; she is able to see her family but goes somewhere else. WHAT?!
Overall
Most definitely a very enjoyable book. The necessary portions of action are there, as well as the plot-twists and great characters. The writer made some decisions in this book that didn't feel natural and weren't good for the story, in my opinion. I do believe that John Yeo Jr. is a great author in the superhero-genre and I'd love to see more books, or maybe even a bookseries about some awesome superheroes with creepy/astonishing abilities!

What's your favorite superhero?!
