Synopsis
Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

My thoughts
When I started re-reading this book, I never thought that I would like it better than the first time I read it, but I did. So many little details were in this book that I had forgotten about. I planned to read King's Cage this year and decided to read Glass Sword and Red Queen. I totally rushed through the last part of this book, the final 200 pages. What a great ride!

Pros
  • New characters: I love the addition in the characters. So many new characters are to be met in this book and to be fallen in love with. The variety in abilities that the characters have is astonishing and so well made up.
  • Character development: Mare can't be the same girl she was in the first book, and it's so strong how that is described in this second book. Just like other characters who experienced life changing things. It's realistic to read how Mare is struggling with herself and all the feelings that come with the decisions she had to make and has to make. I also like that her feelings changed towards the other characters in the book, because of what she went through.
  • Action: This book is fast paced and there is a lot of action in this book. It is a welcome addition and this makes it very clear that Mare is fighting for something that's worth it. The book talks about war at some point, but it also feels like war is coming and I like that Victoria Aveyard could capture that so well in this book
  • No one is spared: The tension is kept high when books have casualties. You start to care for certain characters and so does the main character. Some authors write about war and dark times, but no one is suffering. Well, in this book you should be ready to lose some of your beloved characters!

Cons
Couldn't come up with anything significant.

Overall
I love discovering new books, but I also love re-discovering a book. I remember that I gave this book 4 stars before, but I was swept of my feet with all the details that I didn't see the first time. Of course, the ending was not a surprise for me, but I still liked it anyway. Re-reading a book hasn't had me surprised like this before. I can't wait for King's Cage!

Other opinions on this book
"Aveyard certainly has a flair for the dramatic... The action hits the ground running and doesn't stop until after the last page is turned."

"High-stakes, excitement and sharp plot twists make this a fast-paced, exciting read and a thrilling sequel."

Memorable quotes from this book
"No one is born evil, just like no one is born alone. They become that way, through choice and circumstance."

"I am a weapon made of flesh, a sword covered in skin. I was born to kill a king, to end a reign of terror before it can truly begin."

Thanks for reading!
