Synopsis
When the gods leave and evil freely rules Ashlund, Una and her family bear down for the season of darkness. Seemingly safe in the comfort of her own home, she explores her newly acquired gift with the help of her loved ones. Within days, her plans are interrupted and instead of fighting boredom, she finds herself fighting to survive.

Trapped in a situation where there is no escape, Una endures the worst the Authority has to offer. Who knew family could be so kind...or so ruthlessly cruel? For all the things her parents taught her about surviving in a world set against them, they never prepared her for this. Una is about to discover the true demons of the dark were here all along.

My thoughts
When Jennifer Arntson asked me to also read the second book in this series I agreed, but I didn't expect to give it 5 stars. I gave the first book 3 stars, mainly because I didn't understand the main character at all times and the tension was low throughout big parts of the book. This book is SO MUCH better and I think it's worth mentioning that Arntson grew as an author.

Pros
  • Una: Una felt much more like a real person in this book. I love how stubborn she is and that she is caring for other as all times. Throughout the book, she always puts others first. The way her personality develops is constant and that's what makes her a believable personality. In the first book I found some of Una's choices weird and they didn't fit how she was portrayed. In this second book, Una is one of the strong parts and that's a compliment to Arntson; the way she paints Una's character in this second book.
  • Answers: Some things that happened were weird and I was hoping to get answers. Arntson doesn't forget to explain the big and important things in this book and it left me satisfied.
  • Gruesome: Oh man... The tension was a con for me in the first book, because a major thing happens and not much comes after it. In this book, the author is able to keep the tension high at all times. I was so curious what was going to happen next and that made me rush through the book. It also made it very enjoyable to read.
  • What next: I hope there is going to be a third book, but I couldn't find anything about it on Goodreads. I'd love to read more about Una, her family and how everything is going to evolve with her and Blue.
Cons
None..

Overall
I admire Arntson for the transformation she went through within two books. I wasn't a big fan of the first book, even though her writing is excellent. In this book, both my cons from the first book turned in to pros for the second book. I hope Jennifer is going to write a third book in this series because I'm not ready to leave Una, her family and this world behind!

Thanks for reading!
