Synopsis
Ally D'Aplièse is about to compete in one of the world's most perilous yacht races, when she hears the news of her adoptive father's sudden, mysterious death. Rushing back to meet her five sisters at their family home, she discovers that her father - an elusive billionaire affectionately known to his daughters as Pa Salt - has left each of them a tantalising clue to their true heritage.

Ally has also recently embarked on a deeply passionate love affair that will change her destiny forever. But with her life now turned upside down, Ally decides to leave the open seas and follow the trail that her father left her, which leads her to the icy beauty of Norway...

My thoughts
While reading the first book, I wasn't sure if I'd continue the series. The book, however, made me so curious about the second book that I decided to pick it up. It was fun to get to know another one of the Seven Sisters and I love how they have such different personalities. This story takes us to Norway and I feel like that's the strongest part; The way the history is connected with the present. I'll definitely keep reading this series.

Pros
  • Strong start: This book started out so strong, I missed that a bit in the first book. This book had that looming feeling that something awful was going to happen. You're wishing and praying that the inevitable won't happen. I loved being so involved in the book. It moved me to tears at some point.
  • Flashbacks: This book had flashbacks, like the first book and I was really glad that the author decided to keep that the same. It feels like two stories in one book and you're trying to figure out what the past has to do with the present. That was also what I loved about the first book and I still loved it in this book, so I hope I'll be treated to another two-in-one book with the next one!
  • Build up: This was a strong and powerful story that takes place in one of the worst times in history. There is a beautiful message behind this book and I just felt like it was so much stronger than the first book. This book also gives a bit of a glimpse toward the next book, that's a smart move. It kept me reading with the first book as well. I'm curious!
Cons
  • Conversations: I feel like conversations weren't always that flowing and didn't feel that natural at all times. Take Herr Bayer, he talks to Anna like she's a 6 year old. I felt like that was so annoying. Other conversations felt cold and distant and that was not just the case in the flashbacks, also in the present time. I don't really know how to explain it, it just didn't feel like real life conversations to me.
Overall
I'm a big fan of the Seven Sisters as of now. I wasn't that convinced with the first book, but I am now. The search, the mystery, the history; Yay! I can't wait to find out where the next sister is from and what past-times she will discover.

Other opinions on this book
"The second installment of Riley's sweeping series doesn't disappoint, jumping from present-day Europe to nineteenth-century Norway and back again. Riley's talent for blending current events with detailed backstories will intrigue historical-fiction readers."
- Booklist

"Romantic, sweeping, luxurious and glamorous."

  1. Excellent review

The entire series sounds original I guess that there are also a lot of mysteries that are revealed as the books unfold. I wonder if future installments will hold up.
