Synopsis
Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish.

Lowen arrives at the Crawford home, ready to sort through years of Verity's notes and outlines, hoping to find enough material to get her started. What Lowen doesn't expect to uncover in the chaotic office is an unfinished autobiography Verity never intended for anyone to read. Page after page of bone-chilling admissions, including Verity's recollection of what really happened the day her daughter died.

Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents would devastate the already grieving father. But as Lowen's feelings for Jeremy begin to intensify, she recognizes all the ways she could benefit if he were to read his wife's words. After all, no matter how devoted Jeremy is to his injured wife, a truth this horrifying would make it impossible for him to continue to love her.

My thoughts
Thanks to Kim for doing this buddyread with me. We were able to DEVOUR this book within a week. We wanted to know so badly what was going to happen. This is one of my favorite books this year, definitely top 5 material. It reminded me a bit of Gone Girl, another great thriller that I loved.

Pros
  • Little bits of information: It was so strong, that in this book you get little bits of information. The main character finds a manuscript and is reading it a chapter at a time. I was always happy to see we would get another chapter from the manuscript, because it was so sick and twisted. You only get all the information at the end and then I was still wondering if you really did get all the information...
  • Aching to know: I was just DYING to know how this book would end. It's geniously written and the fact that I was able to do a buddyread so fast means that it was a bizarrely good book. I just wanted to keep reading and keep reading waaaaay past the point that I had discussed with my buddy.
  • Physical reaction: I had a strong physical reaction to this book. I was so scared to read it a night, I had goosebumps every once in a while. I felt real grief and all the emotions. I also felt a bit claustrophobic while reading this book, just like the main character feels that way in the house she's living in. I felt like I was trapped in the book and that danger was ahead.
  • Ending: The ending was amazeballs. I have NO idea what to believe. I'm not really sure if we even got an ending. There are lies within lies and answers within answers in this book and I'm in love with the way the book ended. It totally fits the story.

Cons
Nah.

Overall
Definitely a must read if you're a fan of Gone Girl, thrillers, mystery and books that just leave you aching for more. This is one of the best books I've read this year and I would recommend it to everyone that likes a good fast-paced page-turner. Go. Read. This. Book. Now!

Memorable quotes from this book
"I was difficult. An emotionally challenging puzzle he wasn't up for solving. Which was fine. I wasn't in the mood to be solved."
