Synopsis
Sixteen-year-old Silver Melody lives in a world where 80% of the population has modified their DNA. Known as the altereds, those people now possess enhancements like wings, tails, and increased strength or intelligence. Although Silver’s parents created the nanite pill used to deliver these genetic modifications, Silver is proud of her unadjusted state.

However, when the president declares all unadjusteds must take a nanite, Silver has no choice but to flee the city with her father and some friends to prevent the extinction of the unadjusteds.

With Silver’s mother in prison for treason, Silver’s father is the unadjusteds’ only hope at finding a cure. But time is running out as Silver’s father is captured by the president’s almost immortal army. Vicious hellhounds are on Silver’s trail, and her only chance to recover her father involves teaming up with a new group of unlikely friends before all humanity is lost.

My thoughts
If I understand it correctly, this book is a debut, and I think it's pretty well done for a first book! I had no trouble reading this book and I was enjoying the story. It had a classical villain and a lovely group of characters. I think that the story overall is unique and well thought through. Even though there were some things that didn't add up for me and little things that irked me, I enjoyed reading this book.

Pros
  • Pills: There are SO many YA books out there that have something with powers that's in a persons blood. I've seen so many different variations in books where blood is a key role. I was so glad that that wasn't the case in this book. I love how you receive abilities from pills in this book. It was fun to read not the same old same old and to see that an author has a different take on abilities and how to get them.
  • Characters: I'm always a sucker for a book that has a nice variety of characters. A colorful group of people, so to say. Of course, these characters all have their own abilities and super-powers and that's what makes it fun to read. It really adds a lot of variation to the action scenes as well.
  • Song: I really do believe that this is where this author shines. There is a song in this book that plays, to my opinion, a big part and I love how creative and nice it was. I always wrote poems when I was younger, I feel like that's in the same boat as songs and I know how hard it is to write something that lives up to your own standards. I enjoyed the creativity and the flow of the song.

Cons
  • Things that irked me: I'm not a nitpicker. Well, I do believe myself that I'm not. But when things in a book start to irk me and if there is more than one, I can get a little bit annoyed by it. This book had several little things (no big ones) that didn't add up for me. Like people being invisible; it's clearly stated that they can't see each other. A few sentences later, one of the characters is able to see the other persons face? Or maybe the part where a person lost a flashlight (that was really important), but was still able to see? It didn't hinder me in reading this book, but there were little things, like the ones I just described and at some point I just get a little irked by it and are not able to not mention it.
Overall
Finally an unique look on superpowers and abilities. There are already so many books out there that have abilities and superpowers based on blood colour, this book had a different take on that. I liked the group of characters and I think that this author is really a creative person. That's what I liked the best; the parts where that creativity really stood out.

Thanks for reading!
I'd love to talk books; please let me know what you think about this book review.
